Goodbye October, Hello November 2016 Edition

Hello lovely people of the interwebs! It’s been awhile – like two months too long! A lot of wonderful things have happened between August and now. It’s been challenging, but in the same regard, positively rewarding. The semester is nearly over and I’m managing A’s in all of my classes; a feat I am really proud of  🙂

As far as reading and writing, I’ve done a lot of the former. I’m only five books away from completing my Goodreads challenge! I’ve been writing poems here and there, mostly about love and wonder – that moment where everything changes and the world looks new.

Before I get a little ahead of myself, below are my favorite things for the past couple of months.

Favorite Book

I’ll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson. In a coming of age story, Noah and Jude navigate the treacherous waters of life. The story is told in two alternating timelines. Noah’s chapters are of the past, while Jude’s is of the present. I love the beautiful lyrical writing style that Nelson uses to capture what it means to grow. I was instantly captivated by Noah and Jude, and while I read I forgot about my surroundings. To me, that is what makes a book positively mesmerizing and unforgettable. I laughed. I cried. I had my heart broken and put back together. This book is everything I expected and more. I highly recommend I’ll Give You the Sun to be at the top of your TBR pile.

Favorite Music

I may be a little late onto the band wagon, but I’ve fallen in love with the 1975. One of my favorite songs from their self-titled album is Heart Out.

Favorite Show

Reign

Season 3 on Netflix was just updated recently and I quickly immersed myself back into Mary’s world. A lot of people have conflicting feelings about this season because well…death. It comes back around with a vengeance.

The overwhelming emotion that plagues Mary is heartbreaking. The inevitable death that hangs over Francis comes true, but with twists that are sure to leave the viewers satisfied. Mary surrounds herself with a frenemy as her rival across the sea, Elizabeth, seeks ways to destroy her.

What I liked most about this season was the growth of Mary. There is one specific scene towards the end where she commands power and strength.

I honestly can’t wait to see what the next season brings! There are rumors about it being the last season and if it is…well, if you didn’t know – Mary dies at the hands of her cousin, Elizabeth. To see how the network unfolds the last few years of Mary’s life will be interesting.

If you’ve seen the latest season of Reign, what do you think of the season and of what is ahead?

Favorite App

PvZ Heroes

This is a new app in the Plants vs Zombie world using playing cards to attack the opponent. Users can play both the Plant or Zombie and whichever one you play is the hero of the story.

I think this is a unique way to view the “there’s always two sides of the story” concept. The more you play, the more you uncover new playing cards and heroes. There’s also comic strips before each match! There is an incredible amount of detail in this game and if you like PvZ then you’ll definitely like this spin-off game!

Favorite Drink

With the weather getting cooler, and the days growing shorter, a pumpkin spice frappuchino is what I like. I also can’t survive without water lately 😉

I hope your November is cozy, warm, and filled with happiness!

Stay groovy,

Emma

Book Review: Vicious by V.E. Schwab

Vicious (Vicious, #1)Author: V.E. Schwab

Publisher: Tor

Release date: September 24, 2013

Pages/Format: 364 pages, Hardcover

Purchase from: Amazon | Barnes & Noble

SYNOPSIS

Victor and Eli started out as college roommates—brilliant, arrogant, lonely boys who recognized the same sharpness and ambition in each other. In their senior year, a shared research interest in adrenaline, near-death experiences, and seemingly supernatural events reveals an intriguing possibility: that under the right conditions, someone could develop extraordinary abilities. But when their thesis moves from the academic to the experimental, things go horribly wrong. Ten years later, Victor breaks out of prison, determined to catch up to his old friend (now foe), aided by a young girl whose reserved nature obscures a stunning ability. Meanwhile, Eli is on a mission to eradicate every other super-powered person that he can find—aside from his sidekick, an enigmatic woman with an unbreakable will. Armed with terrible power on both sides, driven by the memory of betrayal and loss, the archnemeses have set a course for revenge—but who will be left alive at the end?

TREAD CAREFULLY LOVELIES. SPOILERS MAY LIE AHEAD. DON’T SAY I DIDN’T WARN YOU.

Schwab blurs the line between bad and worse.

I don’t usually read adult fiction, much less adult fantasy, but I am so glad that I did! Vicious was a wild page-turner with engrossing character and an equally captivating world within the boundaries of our own. Victor and Eli challenge death as a way to understand how an NDE (Near Death Experience) can affect EO’s (Extra Ordinary) people. Their studies lead them to a mad, but interesting conclusion – that the right kind of NDE can create extraordinary superpowers. Unfortunately, when Eli and Victor acquire their powers – circumstances lead them to turn on each other and seek revenge for the life they’ve each lost.

The story is set up between interchanging chapters of the past and present. For the first half of the book, we see the events that started it all from Victor’s perspective – the thesis between Eli and Victor, the experiments, the tragic scene that ruined it all. In the future, Victor is accompanied by a girl named Sydney and a man named Mitch. Together, the three are a motley crew. Sydney and Mitch’s story slowly unfold as the main story line progresses, reveling their own thoughts and intentions. I found it interesting that from the very beginning we know who Victor is. He isn’t good. Far from it. He’s a complex character with flaws like greed. In my opinion, Victor is a good person – better than Eli.

In the second half of the book, we see the life changing events through Eli’s eyes. It’s interesting to finally see his thoughts that inevitable lead him to feel like he is a god. He is an extremist and condemns all other EOs, hunting them down and disposing of them by himself until he meets Serena, a fellow EO with a superpower that is unnaturally useful. I didn’t like Eli or Serena and that’s a good thing. It means that all of Schwab’s characters were written vibrantly, with personalities that greatly differ between one another. They each have a sense of morality and are dangerously captivating with gifts that are either a blessing or a curse. Eli and Serena were distant and cold characters. Eli’s hero complex and belief towards EOs was…uncanny. While, Serena had no sort of loyalty and ultimately betrays someone close to her.

I see Victor and Eli’s pursuit of one another in the present like a game of cat and mouse. Who is smarter? Who will outwit the other?

The story is fast-paced and I loved that aspect of the book! I’ll be honest, though, the first 100 pages were a little slow for me, yet, I could not stop reading because with every chapter that passed a little of the story was revealed. I wanted to know more. I wanted to know what happened between Eli and Victor and what would ultimately happen to them once they reunited.

If you’re looking for a superhero in this story, well, there isn’t one. Schwab blurs the line between bad and worse and it’s up to you to decide who is better in their own regard.

Vicious is a thriller that will have you mesmerized until the very last sentence. I highly recommend!

Goodbye June, Hello July 2016 Edition

Hi hiiii hiiiii! How is everyone’s summer going? So far my summer has been a little (a lot) unproductive. I can’t seem to stop binging Netflix shows and devouring my never ending TBR pile. But that’s what summers are for, right? Some much needed R & R is due after the hectic spring semester.

We’ve passed our half way mark of 2016. How are your goals going? Still shooting for those new year’s resolutions? I know that I’ve lost my way a little and I hope to talk about that in a future post or even before this post is up. If I do post it, I’ll be sure to link it here.

I haven’t been posting monthly favorites as I felt that they got a little redundant. I’m not sure if it was something enjoyable to read. If so, please let me know and I’ll continue doing monthly favorites opposed to the bi-monthly favorites I’ve transitioned to.

There is so much to say. So much that I want to say and possible get advice. That will be for another post as well as this isn’t what you came here for. I’d like to say thank you to all of you who are still out there. I love you. Truly.

As always, here are my monthly favorites for May/June. I hope you enjoy and maybe find something new to try!

Favorite Book (s)

Me Before You by Jojo Moyes. The film adaptation for this book premiered in the beginning of June and I absolutely had to read the book before I went and saw the movie with a friend. I unfortunately have not completed the book as I write. I still need about 60 pages to go until the heart-wrenching begins. I did go and see the movie and cried my eyes out. It was charming and poignant with vivid characters both in black and white and on screen. Where I left off in the book is right before Lou and Will go on their vacation *cue heartbreak* For those who read the book and saw the film, what did you think? Did it live up to all your expectations?

Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare. My reaction in a gif:

So much happens. SO MUCH. I cannot emphasis enough on the pivotal and shocking scenes that happen in this book. THIS book was just…it was exactly what I needed from Clare. I absolutely love the world she’s created and I’m pretty sure I’ll be reading her books until I’m an old lady and can’t read anymore due to poor vision. By then, I’m sure there will be some cool reading gadget 😉

I really adored the amount of diversity in this book. Clare shines a light on disabilities and how they are seen in the Shadowhunter world, has POC characters who aren’t just supporting characters for the main characters; they actually have stories and an incredible amount of character development. Lastly, we find out a piece of the Shadowhunter world – we find out why Parabati cannot have romantic relationships. Dun dun dunnnnn.

I’ll definitely be writing a few review of my thoughts for LM. If you love Cassandra Clare’s books and writing, this is a series that you don’t want to miss out on.

The Raven King by Maggie Stiefvater. The last book in this magical world was bittersweet. Here are my instant thoughts upon finishing the series:

Magical. Extraordinary. Breathtaking. The Raven King was a beautifully crafted end to a captivating series. I cried as the inevitable truth of death and of hope, no matter how small, came to be. It is bittersweet to say goodbye to the wonderfully vivid characters Stiefvater has intricately woven to fit so perfectly in a world where magic exists. I will carry a little piece of Henrietta and of Cabeswater forever and I will never forget Blue and her Raven Boys.

This series isn’t for everyone but when it is – it is so good. Filled with unforgettable characters and a beautifully imaginative world, The Raven Cycle is a definite-must try series to read.

Favorite Music

Jon Bellion is once again my favorite artist for the month. His debut album the “Human Condition” came out June 10th and it is absolutely phenomenal! I can’t get enough of it. One of my favorite songs is “Maybe IDK.” Also, he’s a fantastic artist. I mean, look at that cover art ❤

Favorite Shows

So I kind of went Netflix/Starz crazy and binged watched a lot of shows. These were my favorite for May/June:

Scream

Outlander

Orange Is the New Black

Young & Hungry

Favorite Video Game

Pokemon X/Y

I haven’t played a Pokemon game in well, FOREVER. I grabbed this edition of Pokemon after days of searching for great games to play on the Nintendo 3DS. Pokemon X/Y was one of the TOP 10 games to play so I grabbed the X version. I loved the new 3D version. It’s amazing and really interactive! I also love the new region that is introduced to us as well as the variety of Pokemon. If you love the older versions, don’t fret! Pokemon from the various generations are still found within the game.

I literally played the game for days and would not stop until I completed it. I lived and breathed Pokemon X for 25 hrs.

My addiction was bad. I also caught the legendary Pokemon! To this day, I cannot for the life of me catch Mewtwo.

Have you played any Pokemon games recently? If so, which game is your favorite?

Favorite Accessory

Faux Pearl Earrings

I don’t leave the house without a pair of faux pearl earrings I bought at Old Navy. They were under $10! When I forget to wear them I feel naked and instantly regret leaving them on my dresser. I love how pearl earrings are a classic staple in my life. I can wear them with absolutely anything 🙂

That’s all I have for you wonderful people today! What were your monthly favorites? I’d love to hear about it in the comments down below!

Lots of love,

Emma

Goodbye February, Hello April 2016 Edition

Hi hi hi! It’s been a beautiful hectic 3 month. Let’s play #CatchUpWithEm 😛

I didn’t do anything extraordinary, but I have been working tirelessly for my future goals. I feel like a new person and I like this person who is busy, fun, and productive. I’ve started bullet journaling to keep track of tasks and personal goals. I’ve integrated exercise into my life, though, I do not do it every day. I go 3x a week and I’ve never felt more alive and healthy! I’ve also been trying to write every week part of the 52 short stories in 52 weeks challenge that I’ve personally signed up to do! Lastly, towards the end of January I got an opportunity for a freelance writing job. That is going splendid!

January brought the beginning of the Spring semester. I have loads and loads and more loads of reading which is already drowning me in a sea of perpetual speeches and projects. Joy. I try to find time to do the things I love like reading Lady Midnight! Though, I am a turtle and only half way through the novel. I’m avoiding spoilers from the interwebs 😛

Overall, it’s been a wonderful 3 months full of self-discovery and new adventures! Before I go on to a jumble of words, as always, here are the things I enjoyed immensely in the winter.

Favorite Books

The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. My friend Remy over at Ramisa the Authoress wrote about her love for Oscar Wilde and his book Dorian Gray, which quickly prompted me to go out and buy a copy of it. I instantly fell in love with Wilde’s beautiful prose and thought-provoking ideas of aestheticism and duplicity. I’m only halfway through the novel and am enjoying it immensely. It’s an easier classic to read without being lost in flowery writing.

Also, a shout out to the lovebird who also recommended this book to me a year ago!

Favorite Music

My brother introduced me to Jon Bellion and it was love at first listen. I currently have “Run Wild” playing on repeat.

I’ve also been loving Years and Years. I discovered this beautiful band while surfing YouTube one late sleepless night. I bought their album the next morning and I sing my heart out while I drive to school and work. My favorite song from their album so far is “Worship.”

Favorite Movie

Zootopia

Do I even have to explain this? DO I? If you haven’t gone to see this powerful and adorable movie, what have you been doing with your life? Zootopia is about Judy Hopps, a bunny who dreams of becoming a cop and moving to the big city of Zootopia, where all kinds of animals live in peace and harmony. Something threatens this peaceful community and it is up to Judy and Nick Wilde, a con artist she blackmails (hehehe ;), to solve the mystery.

I’m afraid to spoil this wonderful movie so I will just say that it is truly amazing! If you have the chance to go and watch it go, go, go! 🙂

Favorite Accessories

Nike Juvenate Sneakers

At work, the company finally let us wear sneakers and my feet couldn’t have been happier! I splurged a lot in these shoes and don’t regret it at all. Treat your feet to good comfy shoes.

Normally, I wouldn’t pay more than $20 for my shoes. These retail at $90. That is a huge difference. I needed good shoes, though, as I have been suffering from horrible back pain that doctors deem is my sciatic nerve. The shoes have greatly improved my physical state. They act as a multipurpose shoe. I can wear them to work, school, and the gym!

Bear Paw Hiking Boots

In my journey to be healthy, I’ve been hiking as much as I can. I’ve gone once a week with my best friend or the lovebird. After realizing that my Sketcher sneakers were not good shoes to hike (I kept slipping and sliding on rocks and fell a handful of times :O), I bought a pair of hiking boots. They were an impulse buy because I never planned on buying them until I saw them on sale at Big 5. Normally retailing at $60 and I bought them 50% off! 😀 I’ve worn them once to Red Rock and hiking has never been easier!

The picture to the right are similar to the ones I bought, but are not the same brand.

Favorite Beauty Product

Organic Surge Overnight Sensation Night Cream

For the last month and half, I have been using this night cream after I shower or wash my face with soap or a scrub. It’s done wonders to my skin. I feel like my skin is a lot smoother and looks healthier. The healthy part may be due to me eating a little better. I’ve notice a change in my skin tone as well. It’s evened out quite a bit, but that may also be a product of a new sun screen lotion I’ve been trying.

All in all, I really love this product. I bought it Marshalls at half the cost. It retails for $17.49 and I am kicking myself for not buying another jar.

Organic Surge is a really great company as they do not test on animals. Their products are also suitable for vegetarians and vegans.

How has the year been treating you? Let me know! I dearly do miss you all! Hope all is well 🙂

Much love,

Emma

End of 2015

With the end of the year coming to a close it is often a person finds themselves reflecting on the past and the prospects the new year awaits.

Here are my reflections:

2015 was a whirlwind of adventure and self revelations. I discovered a lot about myself while diving into new aspirations. As I think back, I distinctly love the amount of travel I was fortunate to take with loved ones. I want to do that more. I want to travel more in 2016 and fall in love with uncharted territory.

I want to truly set a healthy goal and meet it. I lost 12 lbs in 2015 and though, that is a great accomplishment, I could have done better. I want to be better. I want to learn how to cook, to be a better support system for the people I love and to strangers, and I want to be a formidable force in trying new things! I don’t want to settle for complacency. Challenging myself is something I hope to achieve in 2016.

My reading goal was not met and I am kicking myself for it. There was definitely more time spent on Netflix than on my endless TBR list. 2016 will focus on my reading endeavors; expanding my horizons is on my list and I am happy to share that I’ve been doing just that the last two months of 2015 🙂

Diving into my area of study is another one of my goals for 2016. I do not have a Master’s in English, nor do I feel like I am superior in the language. I want to grow in my knowledge for all things that involve literature, including the dreaded basics of grammar and structure.

Lastly, I want to work on my writing. The last few months I’ve mostly worked on short stories that I’ve absolutely adored. I need to not fear the uncertainty and just…do it! I need to write a full length novel. My heart and soul are positively itching for it! Here is to 2016 being the year I get back to my dream.

2016 will be my year of greatness! What are your goals/resolutions for the new year? I’d love to hear about them! ❤

I hope you all bring in the new year safely! Happy New Year everyone!

Emma

Goodbye September, Hello October (2015)

*waves* Hiiiiiiiii! I’ve missed you all! It’s been so long since I’ve talked to you! I’ve accumulated lots of favorites over the past few months and I’ve got exciting news! And then there is a bit of depressing news. First, the good news: I’ve actively been writing again; little snippets of excerpts here and there. Nothing concrete. I’ve also started university back up again and biology is seriously kicking my bum. I’m kicking ass in my World Literature class though >.< Now, for the bad news: my laptop has officially died. My hard drive has failed me and thankfully I had majority backed up on Kevin’s computer so that’s a definite plus. I’m temporarily out of a computer at the moment and the goal is to save up enough money within these next two months to buy a new one! I knew old Hubert would leave me, but I was counting on later rather than sooner.

I think that’s all I’ve got for you as an update! Now, on to what this post is all about.

Favorite Book

The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman. I’ve never read a book by Neil Gaiman before and I’m glad to have read this one first as I was completely and utterly taken away by the beautiful vivid descriptions, and held captive by it’s mysterious and alluring story line. I just…I felt like I was floating and was an active member within the story as the chain of events unfolded before my eyes. I loved every minute of it and when I was away from the story it took every bit of my will to not plunge back in head first or I would surely drown.

Thoughts after reading the novel:

That last paragraph has me wondering if I had fallen into a black hole and didn’t remember it happening.

This book was utterly brilliant and captivating. The wonderful illusions and stomach turning foreshadowing gripped my heart and wouldn’t let go. To put it simply, I’m a fan. I’m definitely a fan.

I look forward to reading more of Gaiman’s works in the future!

Favorite Music

“New Americana” by Halsey is “my jam” as Anna from The Writer Diaries says. The song is jarring and rebellious. I love how different it is and her voice is absolutely beautiful! I haven’t listened to her album, yet. It’s on my list of things to do this month!

P.S. Doesn’t the narrative in the intro sound like perfect dialogue for The Hunger Games? 😉

Favorite Show

Doctor Who

With any spare time I have I watch Netflix before bed to calm my racing thoughts. Recently, I’ve been catching up on season 8 of Doctor Who and it’s bloody brilliant as always! I approve of Capaldi as the Doctor and Jenna Coleman is amazing as always!

I don’t know how to exactly explain this new Doctor’s persona. I call it eccentric with a little bit of insanity. I question his methods at times but he always has the best intentions at heart. His relationship with Clara is often times rocky, but their bond is strong.

I’m currently on the second to last episode of the season and things are :O I cried last night for about twenty minutes and my heart is still heavy thinking about the events that have transpired. Also, can anyone say twist? Like seriously! There are so many different time streams; the possibilities are endless!

If you have reservations about Capaldi being the Doctor, give him a chance. He’s honestly amazing and we all know how difficult it is to accept a new Doctor when a beloved one regenerates.

Favorite App

Tsum Tsum

Is anyone else as addicted as I am? I am totally in love with this game. I’ve been playing it non-stop for a month and it still has my attention! It’s just super cute and adorable and has one of my favorite things: Disney! So the goal of the game is to link 3 or more Tsum Tsum’s in a row to get points. If you link 7 or more Tsum Tsum’s you get magical bubbles that get you bonus points! You also collect coins and with those coins you can trade them in for Tsum Tsum’s.

I’ve got quite a collection of Tsum Tsum’s and I gotta collect them all! My favorite right now is Dale. If you collect his character, it fills up his special skill, which turns a line of Tsum Tsum to Dale. This is beneficial as you can form a 12+ link and get those magical bubbles!

Favorite Beauty Product

Garnier Triple Nutrition Shampoo

My hair has become unmanageable during the last few months. My problem is frizz. And the humidity had not been too kind in the summer. My mom noticed the condition of my hair and she bought a shampoo that she thought would help and it is a MIRACLE.

I usually take showers at night and when I wake up my hair is nice and wavy. It doesn’t stick up in random places, especially at the very top of my head. The smell is also incredible. It’s not too strong nor does it sting your scalp. Personally, I don’t like mint shampoo’s because it feels like it is searing my head.

If you have a problem with frizz I definitely recommend this product! And no, this isn’t being sponsored 🙂

Favorite Accessory

Knee-High Socks

Okay, so the temperature hasn’t dropped drastically like in other places in the country. I wake up early Sun-Thurs and when I leave it’s about 70 degrees out. So it’s cold for us Vegas peeps. I wear sneakers every day and they aren’t warm on my toes. The socks I bought were from DSW and they were on sale for 70%! It was a steal. I grabbed five pairs and I am readily prepared for the onslaught of winter. I can practically feel the chill in my bones. Tis a good thing!

Anyways, I love how knee-high socks keep my legs warm and they aren’t uncomfortable to wear during the day when it gets to the mid 90’s. So that’s definitely a perk! I actually have the pair to the left! 🙂

||

As an added bonus, I want to share with you the cover reveal of Cassandra Clare’s highly anticipated novel, Lady Midnight! Eeeep! It’s definitely one of my MUST reads for 2016! It just needs to be in my life RIGHT. NOW. I was scrolling through FB and I came across it only a few minutes ago and I want to share my excitement with you all! The cover is magical. *grabby hands*

Lady Midnight (The Dark Artifices, #1)

What were your favorite things in September? Leave me a comment down with your thoughts! 😀

With love always,

Emma

SYNOPSIS

Bad boy Kaidan Rowe has never wanted for anything—money, popularity, musical talent…hot girls—but seducing them is part of his duty as a Nephilim, slave to the demon Dukes. As the son of the Duke of Lust, Kaidan has learned his father’s ways, becoming a master of passion, a manipulator of chemistry. Disobeying his father would mean certain death. Thankfully for Kaidan, he’s good at his job. And he enjoys it.

Until he meets Anna Whitt—sweet, smart, feisty, and inexplicably good—the one girl seemingly immune to his charms. The daughter of a guardian angel and a fallen one, she has a certain power over him, one that makes him wish for more than he could ever deserve.

Determined to save all the Neph from their dark lives as the influencers of sin, Anna joins forces with Kaidan to overcome the demons’ oppressive ways. In the light of her affections, Kaidan must undergo his toughest test of all, a battle of the heart.

Sensual and swoon worthy, this companion volume to the acclaimed Sweet Evil series from New York Times bestselling author Wendy Higgins, told from the perspective of the irresistibly sexy and mysterious Kaidan Rowe, gives readers revealing insights into his struggle, his intense connection to Anna, and most of all, the true emotions that drive him.

Author Note:

Sweet Temptation will encompass the entire trilogy in a condensed version, beginning with Kai’s life before he met Anna, and taking readers through the epilogue of Sweet Reckoning. Sweet Temptation is a companion novel, not meant to be a stand alone story. It will definitely be a richer experience for those who have read the original trilogy.
