WE ARE ALL DUFFS

Author: Kody Keplinger

Release date: September 7, 2010

Purchase from Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Book Depository

SYNOPSIS

Seventeen-year-old Bianca Piper is cynical and loyal, and she doesn’t think she’s the prettiest of her friends by a long shot. She’s also way too smart to fall for the charms of man-slut and slimy school hottie Wesley Rush. In fact, Bianca hates him. And when he nicknames her “the Duff,” she throws her Coke in his face.

But things aren’t so great at home right now, and Bianca is desperate for a distraction. She ends up kissing Wesley. Worse, she likes it. Eager for escape, Bianca throws herself into a closeted enemies-with-benefits relationship with him.

Until it all goes horribly awry. It turns out Wesley isn’t such a bad listener, and his life is pretty screwed up, too. Suddenly Bianca realizes with absolute horror that she’s falling for the guy she thought she hated more than anyone.

WHEN I First Read

I first read this in May of 2012. It was one of the first books I read when I joined Goodreads and became an avid reader.

WHAT I Remember

After being deemed the DUFF (Designated Ugly Fat Friend) by the school’s hottest boy, Bianca can’t stop thinking about the word and what it means. Then, she gets involved with that same boy as a form of distraction to mask the pain at home.

WHY I Wanted To Re-Read

The book turned movie adaptions was release earlier this month and I make it a habit to read or reread the book if I am going to see the movie. I’m actually going to see the movie tomorrow with some friends! I’ve heard the message of the book to movie is quite different, but overall it is still a good book to movie adaptation. We shall see!

HOW I Felt After Re-Reading

I really liked it overall. I can certainly see that my feelings have changed from when I was a seventeen year old girl. I still very much liked the message behind the story – that we are all DUFFS. We all feel like we are the least likeable and least attractive of our circle of friends. What that generally means is that we all have flaws and we perceive ourselves harsher than someone else would. As long as you surround yourself with positive, loving people your circle of the world will be okay.

WOULD I Re-Read Again

I don’t think I will be picking this up again. I will always remember the meaning the book gave to my seventeen year old self and the lesson I’ve remembered now, but it’s not something I would like to spend time reading again. It’s good, but definitely not one of my all time favorites.

Southern Vampires

Author: Charlaine Harris

Publisher: Ace Books

Release date: May 1, 2001

Purchase from Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Book Depository

SYNOPSIS

Sookie Stackhouse is a small-time cocktail waitress in small-town Louisiana. She’s quiet, keeps to herself, and doesn’t get out much. Not because she’s not pretty. She is. It’s just that, well, Sookie has this sort of “disability.” She can read minds. And that doesn’t make her too dateable. And then along comes Bill. He’s tall, dark, handsome–and Sookie can’t hear a word he’s thinking. He’s exactly the type of guy she’s been waiting for all her life….

But Bill has a disability of his own: He’s a vampire with a bad reputation. He hangs with a seriously creepy crowd, all suspected of–big surprise–murder. And when one of Sookie’s coworkers is killed, she fears she’s next…. – Goodreads

NO WORRIES. NO SPOILERS LIE AHEAD. ENJOY!

WHEN I First Read

I must have been a junior or a senior in high school (it was nearly 4-5 years ago!) when I first read Dead Until Dark. I was in my vampire phase. I admit I was a Twi-hard before it became a world-wide phenomenon. After I read Twilight I wanted to get my hands on vampire books. I read Anne Rice, Richelle Mead, and Charlaine Harris.

WHAT I Remember

I remember it was about a girl name Sookie who had telepathic powers; she could read other people’s thoughts. Well, except Bill Compton – a vampire who was made into one of the dead in the 1800’s. The book is about her relationship with Bill and the things that happen in the little town of Bon Temps.

WHY I Wanted To Re-Read

I have most of the series sitting on my bookshelf and I never made it past the first book. So, I wanted to read it again to refresh my memory of events and go forth and read the rest of the series this year.

HOW I Felt After Re-Reading

All I could think was MEH and how similar (in a sense) it was compared to Twilight. Like how Sookie can read other people’s minds but cannot read Bill’s mind for some reason. It was a huge disappointment because I remember loving this book when I was a teen and now I’ve…grown up? I still enjoyed it, but not in the same way I did as I did in the past.

P.S. I do like Harris’ writing style. It’s very stream of consciousness, which is rare in fiction.

P.S.S. I remember blushing when I read the sexy scenes and though they are pretty hot, I do not blush anymore.

WOULD I Re-Read Again

I probably will not. I mean, it’s a good book and very different from the t.v. show (True Blood). I will go on and read the other books because I am curious to know what happens next! Plus, the books are short in length! I re-read this one in one sitting on a Friday.

The Re-Read Challenge: 2015 Edition

So I have been a silent follower of Kelly’s over at Belle of the Literati for over a year now. I saw her exciting co re-reading challenge with fellow blogger Hannah at So Obsessed With and I absolutely had to join! I love re-reading books! I probably re-read a book once or twice  a year.

Two years ago, I re-read the entire Mediator series by Meg Cabot. It’s one of those series’ that I adore and will most likely re-read for the rest of my life. This year I want to commit to re-reading 12 books; 1 book per month.

So why am I doing this, Emma?

Well, I just couldn’t pass up an opportunity like this! Books that you absolutely love are meant to be re-read. That is why you keep them on your shelf and decide not to donate them. I also like the fact that I will be doing this challenge with other like-minded people. I love the fact that I can share my enthusiasm with others! Also, I was probably going to re-read this year so why not sign-up?

What are the rules?

Kelly and Hannah make it real simple for us! There are hardly any rules to join, which makes it 10x easier to join the cavalry! From their respected blogs:

Honestly, we don’t want to have a lot of rules either. We want it to be as easy as possible for anyone to participate, including ourselves. All you have to do is write an intro post stating WHY you want to join and WHAT books you’re hoping to re-read. Then, add it to the sign up linky. After that, just write a post each month recapping what you re-read that month and add it to the linky we’ll post on our blogs each month. That’s it! You’ve earned re-read bragging rights for the month. We’ll explain it all below, but trust us… it’s not difficult.

Easy-peasy. See?

Do you have to review your re-reads?

Absolutely not! Kelly and Hannah give us an option to give a mini-review of our re-read book of the month:

Don’t want to take time away from review books and get behind on posts for your blog? We don’t either! If you feel like re-reading will set you back, you could write a re-read review. This portion is optional, of course, and not required to participate in the challenge or qualify for the giveaways. But if you’re interested, highlight your re-reads with a re-read review. For example, we’ll be answering these questions:

WHEN I First Read

WHAT I Remember

WHY I Wanted to Re-Read

HOW I Felt After Re-Reading

WOULD I Re-Read Again

I just absolutely love the idea of this challenge! And I am so ready to feel the same (or maybe different) emotions I felt the first time around reading a book. It’s quite exciting to share my thoughts with a community of people who get my bookish ways. And I am so thankful for people like Kelly and Hannah who come up with rad ideas for us bookish nerds.

To sign up, head on over to Hannah’s blog and link up your introduction post.
Here are some of the books I plan on re-reading this year. The list is not complete and may subject to change based on my reading whims.

Happy Reading!

With love always,

Emma
